Open call for artworks and art projects
19th Contemporary Art Festival Sesc_Videobrasil: Southern Panoramas

There are eleven days left before the registration deadline for the two open calls of the 19th Contemporary Art Festival Sesc_Videobrasil || Southern Panoramas. Submissions of artworks and projects for artwork production are accepted until November 16. The selected artworks will compete for a cash prize of 75,000 BRL and nine Artist Residency Prizes to be undertaken at Associação’s partner organizations.

Artists from the global South, the festival’s target area, may submit up to three artworks and one project for production of an artwork in any support and using any technique (including but not limited to photography, painting, sculpture, engraving, drawing, sound art, video, performance, installation and wearable art). The 19th festival will provide up to 30,000 BRL (each) in funding for the development of four projects, with oversight from members of the Board of Curators leading up to their presentation during the festival. In turn, selected artworks will compete for 75,000 BRL in cash and nine artist residencies to be undertaken in various locations around the world.

The Contemporary Art Festival Sesc_Videobrasil || Southern Panoramas exhibition has cemented its position as a platform for spreading, fostering and pondering art production from the global South—understood as Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle East, Oceania, parts of Europe and Asia—whose countries strive for novel ways to circulate and publicize their output within the global art scene (read the text of the call to see the list of covered countries). The biennially held festival hosts exhibitions, film screenings, performances, artist residencies, public programs meetings and activities, educational actions and publication launches featuring artists, curators, researchers, critics, journalists and delegates from contemporary art and culture institutions, and focusing on art production from the South. The festival also broadcasts the shortlisted artworks via online research platforms, books, websites, Videobrasil’s social media outlets, as well as self-produced documentary films and TV programs.

The South and its multiple issues will be the focus of the curatorial sections and program of the 19th edition, due from October 6 to December 6, 2015 at Sesc Pompeia (São Paulo), rather than simply of the competitive show as was the case in the past. These issues—which somehow provide the inspiration and the parameters for the selection of artworks and projects to participate in the festival—concern diasporas, hybrid identities, migration flows and travels, first-person accounts, memories, isolation, the social fabric and insularity. To further underscore this perspective, in addition to the open call-based selection of artworks and projects, the 19th festival will feature the works of guest artists who remain fairly unknown at a global level, despite their landmark careers within the Southern scene. The triangulation of Africa, Caribbean and South America lies at the core of their reflections.

There’s still time! Read intently both calls for entries prior to your application and then submit your artworks and art projects for the 19th Contemporary Art Festival Sesc_Videobrasil.
