\nAn artist in residence position is open, starting in 2022 and continuing for a 6-months period, in the Schaufler Lab@TU Dresden, a joint project of THE SCHAUFLER FOUNDATION and TU Dresden (TUD).
\nSchaufler Lab@TU Dresden, launched in 2019, was initiated with the goal of exploring and elucidating the complex relationships among humans, machines, technology and the world from the perspective of the arts, humanities and social sciences. The Lab consists of the two pillars Schaufler Kolleg@TU Dresden (a research training group) and Schaufler Residency@TU Dresden.
\nIn the first funding phase of the Lab (2020\u00e2\u20ac\u201c2022) the central topic is ‘Artificial intelligence (AI) as factor and consequence of societal and cultural change’. Nine fellows from the humanities and social sciences and the resident artists will conduct research on this theme in close exchange with scientists from the university’s STEM disciplines (mathematics, natural sciences and engineering). The members of the research training group examine the topic from the perspectives of philosophy, art history, sociology, theology, history, and communication and political sciences.
\nThe Lab\u00c2\u00b4s residency programme offers committed and internationally active artists the unique opportunity to conduct artistic research on AI and cultural change. It addresses artists from the fields of media art, conceptual art, performance, etc. During the residency, the artist becomes part of TU Dresden\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s scientific community of researchers and students and may draw on resources for artistic and creative productions, both of TUD and of our cooperation partners. The partners are Dresden University of Fine Arts, Ars Electronica Linz, and Hellerau \u00e2\u20ac\u201c European Center for the Arts, etc.
\nThe Schaufler Residency@TU Dresden includes:
\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Access to a competitive array of institutes and workshops for artistic research
\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 A stipend of \u00e2\u201a\u00ac 3,000.00 (net) a month for 6 months
\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 A studio at TU Dresden
\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Production support of up to \u00e2\u201a\u00ac 10,000
\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Solo exhibition at the conclusion of the residency with a catalogue by a respected fine arts publishing house (Sandstein Verlag Dresden)
\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Assistance finding accommodation
\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Optional purchase of one or more pieces produced during the residency for the TU Dresden Office for Academic Heritage\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s art collection
\nArtists have until May 10, 2021 to apply with concepts for projects to be completed in 2022 at TU Dresden in the Schaufler Lab@TU Dresden. Projects should focus on the interface between art and science, explicitly artistic intelligence and its implications for society and the culture of objects. The selection of the artist is made by the the Residency\u00c2\u00b4s selection committee. It includes the contact persons from the Office for Academic Heritage, as well as Gerfried Stocker, Artistic Director of Ars Electronica, Linz; Barbara Bergmann, Director of SCHAUWERK Sindelfingen; Matthias Fl\u00c3\u00bcgge, Rector of Academy of Fine Arts Dresden; Dr. Manuel Frey, Director of the Cultural Foundation of the Free State of Saxony; and Dr. Andreas Handschuh, Chancellor of the TUD.
\nBy accepting an artistic proposal, we invite the chosen artist to develop and realize the project in cooperation with scientists and scholars from TUD. Lectures, talks and workshops within the framework of the Schaufler Lab@TU Dresden as well as a guest seminar at the Academy of Fine Arts Dresden are part of the residency.
\nApplicants have completed relevant international artistic projects, appeared in established international exhibitions and have a clear concept of their own artistic approach as well as an interest in TUD as an academic institution and its cultural, political and social context. They should take up residency in Dresden for the 6 months period.
\nWe expect applicants to be explicitly interested in the exchange of artistic and scientific\/scholarly research and working in transdisciplinary teams and to be able to communicate effectively and proficiently in German or English.
