For one night only, art, music and performance will inhabit once again the public spaces, shop windows and empty venues sprawled across Rua Po\u00c3\u00a7o dos Negros, Lisbon.<\/p>\n
W\u00e2\u20ac\u201cMANPOWER \u00e2\u20ac\u212216 reflects on the meaning of our first festival title – MANPOWER \u00e2\u20ac\u212208 – Out of Many We are MORE than One!<\/p>\n
The word manpower translates to mean man+power originated in the mid-nineteenth century and is defined as \u00e2\u20ac\u0153power in terms of people available or required for work or military service.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d On the other hand, womanpower, first used around the 1940s, was the influence exerted by women as a group especially in the workforce and in social and political activities.<\/p>\n
For the 2016 edition of W\u00e2\u20ac\u201cMANPOWER \u00e2\u20ac\u212216 we want to celebrate both feminine and masculine powers, as well as everything in-between as a way to explore the past, present and future of work, which can manifest
\nas artworks or a variety of practices that extends into livelihoods and social practices.<\/p>\n
Our open call takes a playful approach, asking participants to explore the different kinds of power related to gender, race, ethnicity and lifestyle preferences, responding to everyday phrases that rhyme with \u00e2\u20ac\u0153WOMANPOWER\u00e2\u20ac\u009d, like:<\/p>\n
happy hour, flower power,
\nwhisky sour, baby powder,
\ncoffee hour, ivory tower,
\npolice power, golden shower,
\nwhite flour, quarter hour,
\nstaying power, virgin\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s bower…<\/p>\n
W\u00e2\u20ac\u201cMANPOWER \u00e2\u20ac\u212216 celebrates endurance, fluidity, subversiveness and the perspective shifting potential of art and is homage to the trickster!<\/p>\n
We are looking for exciting works to re-inhabit these (interior and outdoor) spaces through experimental approaches for performance, film, installations, sculptures and public art interventions that will boldly confront the audience outside of conventional art spaces.<\/p>\n
