Call For Submissions Summer 2017
deepwhitesound is now accepting proposals of original audio-based work from international artists worldwide.
deepwhitesound (DWS) is an international online label of experimental audio operating since 2005. Featuring multidisciplinary sound art, experimental music and composition from disparate geographic locations, deepwhitesound supports the diffusion of media and digital distribution. All work featured is offered without charge as full-release, artist-constructed digital downloads under the Creative Commons license. deepwhitesound values diverse local and net-based community, using social media as a platform for collaborative projects and communication between artists, organizers and curators.
deepwhitesound has been supported by grants via Precipice Fund, made possible through Portland Institute for Contemporary Art and Calligram Foundation, part of the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts regional regranting progr am, as well as the Regional Arts & Culture Council. Work released by deepwhitesound has been featured on numerous radio programs including 90.3 KTUH in Honolulu, HI USA, RadioCapsule in Paris, France, Non-Radio in Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico, Hollow Earth Radio in Seattle, WA USA, and Free Lab Radio on 104.4 Resonance FM in London, England.
DWS releases quarterly issues featuring downloadable works centered around experimental audio. Historically, projects have fallen under a number of mediums / genres: spoken word, harsh noise, instant composition, tape music, vocal music, field recording, noise rock, drone, ambient, composition for traditional and non-traditional instruments, folk, sound installation, generative music, interactive socially engaged projects and more. We are interested in continuing to push and confuse boundaries of “sound art” by providing support and exposure opportunities to artists, musicians and collectives who do the same.
Call for Proposals / “Expanded Audio”
Since 2015, DWS has been focused on releasing work that emphasize the digital download as an artist-constructed object following the concept of “expanded audio”. Proposals for releases will ideally feature not only audio work, but an outline of additional media to be included with downloads in order to create unique, one-of-a-kind digital packages that push the boundaries of sound art. Examples of work that may be packaged with audio work include but are not limited to images, text-files, stand-alone applications, html / web files, phone apps, etc. The intention is to provide high-quality releases that elevate digital downloads from disposable media to digital art objects in the interest of perpetuating the ideology that free art is not forgettable art.
Please note that proposals featuring ONLY audio work will not be denied, however artists should be willing to discuss options and ideas regarding “digital packa ging” concepts.
This call for proposals is open to everyone, including current deepwhitesound artists.
Summer 2017 Theme: Blackout
In conjunction with Fight For The Future’s internet-wide day of action to save net neutrality, deepwhitesound will be featuring an issue based around inaccessible media and restricted digital space. We are calling upon artists to create works that consider what digital space provides to whom, and plays with the notion of unheard, self redacted, obfuscated, partially loaded, disconnected, dropped or removed media. The issue will be released on July 12th and purposefully made unavailable for the first day out of solidarity with the global digital effort to advocate for net neutrality.
