SELF-FUNDED RESIDENCY FOR AUDIO-VISUAL ARTIST

CushCush Gallery is launching its call for applications for the 2026 Artist Designer In Residence – ADIR 4U self-funded residency program.

The Artist Designer In Residence (ADIR) is a cross-disciplinary residency program initiated and organized by CushCush Gallery exploring the intersections of arts, design, crafts and cultural exchange with the belief that creativity is nurtured and enriched by the meeting of different cultures, people of all horizons and different worldviews. After 3 first successful editions with the support of the French Embassy in Indonesia and the French Institute in France and in Indonesia, the ADIR program is entering a new phase to expand the residency wider, by involving more stakeholders from the local and international creative ecosystem to further deepen the creative dialogue which has made this program so relevant.

In this new phase, ADIR will invite two designers, one from France and one from Indonesia in partnership with Arcade – Design à la campagne based in Burgundy. To enrich this unique experience, ADIR will welcome an audio-visual artist to participate in the residency alongside the two designers as part of the ADIR 4U self-funded residency program.

For its 2026 – 2027 edition, ADIR is responding to Arcade’s current involvement in Tomorrow, forests, a multi-disciplinary project blending science, practices, culture and creativity to explore the future of forests in the Burgundy region.

Everywhere in the world, forests are indeed increasingly at the center of crucial issues: sustainable management of natural resources, ecological degradation, transmission of forestry-related know-how and crafts, preservation of biodiversity, the evolution of our perception about these ecosystems that sustain our lives. Recent disruptions that impacted Bali further fuel ADIR’s direction towards environmental concerns.

Design and art are some of the disciplines through which the project aims to explore the bond between humans and forests, especially to invent new ways to better understand, interact with and highlight the value of these vital natural spaces. In association with the project, ADIR will provide a multicultural space of experimentation for the designers and the artist to develop their own interpretations and perspectives on this complex multi-faceted theme in specific local natural and cultural environments.

OBJECTIVES

While in Bali, the audio-visual artist will explore this complex topic through the island’s specific cultural and natural context with a focus on its rich arts and crafts traditions. The Balinese belief of living in harmony with God, Mankind and Nature (Tri Hita Karana) has attracted anthropologists, scholars, artists, and visitors alike since the 1920s. Its traditional arts and crafts remain deeply embedded in this belief and play a vital part of various religious rituals across the island. This richness has contributed to the island’s long historical success in tourism but also to an increasingly complex relationship between the preservation of its natural environment and economic development.

The audio-visual artist, alongside the selected designers, will be invited for a 4-week immersive residency, during which they will have the opportunity to explore and delve deeper into Bali’s rich natural environment, unique arts, crafts, traditions and culture through encounters with local artisans, artists and cultural practitioners. This will enable them to embrace the openness and local wisdom inherent in everyday living on the island and respond with sensitivity with his/her own interpretations. As a creative response to these encounters and to the residency’s theme, the artist will be expected to develop an original audio-visual work.

As part of the residency, the audio-visual artist will be expected to share about his/her experience and creative reflections in relation to the residency’s theme with the public in the form of a discussion session. The residency will culminate with an exhibition during which the audio-visual artist will present the result of his/her creative experience and explorations.

Following the return to his/her home country, the artist will complete his/her audio-visual work, which is expected to be showcased at events internationally.
