KUNSTRAUM is calling for submissions for our 2023-2024 Exhibition Program

KUNSTRAUM is an artist hub, studios and a gallery. Through our Open Call for the 2023-2024 Exhibition Program, we select works that present compelling ideas, unconventional methods, and risky themes that expand the parameters of contemporary art. The resulting exhibition theme is selected and curated by our 2023 Curator-in-Residence.

Our gallery is located inside one of our coworking lofts located at 20 Grand Avenue, a beautiful factory building in Clinton Hill near the Navy Yard. Exhibitions are on view for four weeks, plus an additional six months online. 50% of artwork sales go to the artist. The artist must cover their shipping and presentation needs.

Call 1 – Curator in Residence

Open Call for Curator-in-Residence 2023-2024 | Application Deadline: November 15, 2022

KUNSTRAUM is calling for submissions for our 2023-2024 Curator-in-Residence Program.

For the Curator-in-Residence 2023-24 (“CIR”), we are seeking a self-starter with an innovative and ambitious mind who thrives on creative freedom, is comfortable assuming a leadership role, and has an interest in working within an established artist-run gallery. CIR’s mission is to bring a unique curatorial vision to the program and highlight their curatorial practice in the New York art world by facilitating engaging exhibitions and events and building our community.

The CIR is responsible for directing the gallery program at KUNSTRAUM for 12 months. During the residency, they will have the opportunity to present their position through three curated exhibitions: KUNSTRAUM’s annual Members Show, an Open Call Exhibition, and an independent CIR Exhibition as final project with the help of KUNSTRAUM’s team. In addition, the CIR lends support to 1-2 guest curator projects.

KUNSTRAUM will provide $5,000 in exhibition funding for the CIR’s independent final exhibition. The CIR is expected to leverage existing relationships with the press, foundations, art fairs, curators, and collectors to garner support for the exhibition. While the annual membership exhibition will be held in the gallery space of KUNSTRAUM in Brooklyn, it is welcomed to present the independent CIR exhibition in a Manhattan venue and to devote time and energy to finding such a space.

Responsibilities:
• Curate and produce 2 smaller and 1 larger exhibition
• Organize one public event per exhibition
• Support 1-2 guest curators projects
• Manage openings, facilitate tours and art sales
• With the support of KUNSTRAUM’s team, work on the monthly newsletter, press, social media, exhibition de-/installation, member onboarding, community events, studio visits, invite visiting arts professionals, participate in the jury

Qualifications:
• Knowledge of art history and contemporary art topics
• Experience in curating exhibitions and public programs
• Excellent writing, proofreading and communication skills
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
• Comfortable managing deadlines, attention to detail
• Ability to lift, handle and install artwork
• Self-driven, organized, smart time- and resource management
• Must be authorized to work in the United States by February 1, 2023
• Commit 16 hrs per week for curatorial and communal team work

Compensation & Benefits:
• Monthly stipend of $1,000
• Commissions on art and membership sales
• 24/7 access to the space
• CIR Exhibition funding of $5,000

(Expenses for housing, visa or traveling are not covered)

Application Requirements:
• CV/resume including contact information, publications, and 2 professional references
• Curatorial website or portfolio of max. 10 pages
• Curatorial Statement (200 words): What is your vision for 12 months as the CIR of KUNSTRAUM? How do you plan to engage with our community and audience? What issues you are seeking to address through your practice?
• Exhibition Proposal (250-500 words): Describe one specific project with 3-6 artists ready to be shown or a curatorial project idea. Specify the stage of the project.
• Writing samples, including one published article and another writing sample (250-500 words)
• Partnering Venue (1-2 spaces): Do you have a partnering venue in Manhattan in mind or confirmed? Include images, links to artists’ websites, and name of the venue (optional).

Call 1 – Artist in Residence

KUNSTRAUM is calling for submissions for our 2023-2024 Artist-in-Residence Program.

KUNSTRAUM offers artist residencies, thought-provoking exhibitions, public programs, networking opportunities, affordable studio space, curatorial fellowships, and discourse for creative production. Through the rotating artist residency program, we offer three-month residencies for national and international artists on a quarterly cycle to join our community.

All resident artists are encouraged to pursue both their independent projects, as well as to engage with our established community of artists, designers, and filmmakers. Networking events include monthly studio visits by visiting critics and curators, artist salons, exhibition openings, as well as an opportunity to exhibit in the Annual Members Show.

Each Residency Includes:
• A great artist community to meet and interact with
• A desktop-size studio space inside our subdivided lofts with 24/7 access (no living)
• Participation in the Members Show with studio visit and professional exhibition documentation plus 6 months online sales opportunities
• Monthly studio visits by 1-2 New York-based curators, gallerists, critics, and art advisers (sample list in the “About” page of our website)
• Community events including gallery openings, curator walkthroughs, discussions, artist salons, and open studios
• Social media promotion and inclusion of your work on our “Studios” website during your residency
• Access to our internal monthly newsletter with news, events, an open call list with exhibition, grant, and residency opportunities

The studio spaces have 24/7 access with 13 ft. ceilings, a freight elevator, slop sink, secure Wi-Fi, and are meant to be used for work with non-toxic materials only (all painters work on a non-toxic basis). Blick Art Supply, hardware stores, post office, print shops, supermarkets, restaurants, and delis are just 1.5 blocks away, and Home Depot is as close as 10 blocks.

No living is included. The resident artist is responsible for finding their own living arrangements.

Fees:
The residency fee is $650 per month for a 3-month term, with the following starting dates: Oct 2022; Jan 2023; Apr 2023; Jul 2023; Oct 2023; Jan 2024; Apr 2024; Jul 2024; Oct 2024.
