Musical films by artists: Open call

1 December 2019, Edinburgh

Open call for musical films by artists:

Artists moving image / video art / artists’ films that are MUSICALS*.

Run by the Edinburgh Artists’ Moving Image Festival (EAMIF) this open call aims to expand our knowledge of artists that we can work with in the future for an event focused on alternative takes on musicals. We are in discussion with The Fruitmarket Gallery to explore the possibility of a screening of selected films at their temporary venue BookMarket in Dec 2019/Jan 2020. If the event goes ahead then, or is adapted for the future, selected artists would receive a payment for their films being screened.

Please submit your film via this link.

Deadline 27 September, but we encourage you to send films sooner.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for musical films made by artists. This is quite a specific open call, as we are hoping to receive support from a specific fund to do with musicals. We are interested in alternative takes on the musical and are interested in how artists can subvert this genre.

What is a musical?

There is no hard and fast definition of a musical, but generally it’s a film where the characters burst into song in between action or dialogue, and the songs carry the narrative of the film. An informal rule is: If you can watch the film, and turn to the person next to you and confidently say ‘that was a musical’ without having to argue why, then it probably counts. Sung-through films or film-operas where there is only song and no dialogue will also be included. Films that are more like music videos will generally not fit brief but we may be still interested to view them.

Edinburgh Artists’ Moving Image Festival (EAMIF) celebrates video art and experimental film. We delivered two festivals in 2015 and 2016 with events at Filmhouse cinema, The Fruitmarket Gallery, Talbot Rice Gallery, Collective Gallery, Summerhall and Edinburgh College of Art. We are now working on creating year-round one-off events. See more at
