Home: Think global, act local
Exhibition March 20 – May 8th, 2020
The old saying of the alternative movement combines global responsibility with local action. In the home where we are at home, we are strong. The earth is a complex organism in which cause and effect are not always spatially close to one another. Through our decision, we as buyers can have a direct influence on the actions of the polluters.
Example: Primeval forests are being destroyed on Earth, i.e. globally, what I want to fight. That’s why I protest locally, i.e. on site in my neighborhood, if a forest or park is destroyed here, try to save paper myself and don’t buy any items made from tropical wood. Refraining from meat also helps, as cattle are often raised on the cleared land or soy is grown for animal feed.
Example: Increasing carbon dioxide emissions are heating up the Earth’s climate, which is a global problem. As an individual in Germany, I cannot influence politics in China or India so that fewer coal-fired power plants are built there or people do not drive. But I myself can e.g. use a bike as a local decision instead of a car and influence politics.
How do artists express the saying “home: think global, act local” in their works?
